There are a lot of factors to consider when packing clothing for your cruise vacation. While the clothes that you pack will be very dependent on your itinerary, knowing the overall dress code for your cruise line can certainly assist with your packing experience. Please remember, the cruise lines are constantly updating their dress codes and onboard experience so, for the most up-to-date information, please check the cruise line’s website. For all cruise lines, be sure to check the laws and culturally appropriate attire for the ports that you are visiting as different countries do have different regulations and expectations.
AmaWaterWays: Country Club Casual attire for most dinners with recommended dressier attire for Captain’s Dinner.
Azamara Club Cruises: Country Club Casual no bare feet, ball caps, tank tops, or bathing suits are permitted in certain areas. No shorts or torn/distressed jeans during dinner
Carnival Cruise Line:
Casual Dining Cruise Dress Code: Khakis, jeans, dress shorts, collared shirts, summer dresses, casual shorts, capris, blouses, and tops. NO cut-off jeans, men’s sleeveless shirts, tee-shirts, gym or basketball shorts, baseball hats, flip flops, or bathing suit attire.
Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: dress slacks, dress shirts, sport coats for men, cocktail dresses, pant suits, elegant skirts and blouses, evening gowns. NO jeans, shorts, tee-shirts, sportswear, gym or basketball shorts, baseball hats, flip-flops, bathing suit attire, men’s sleeveless shirts.
Evening Chic Nights: cocktail dresses, skirts, pants, or designer jeans, dress shirts, sweaters, elegant tops, sport coats, or blazers optional
Smart Casual Nights: skirts, pants, jeans with sports coats, and causal tops
T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurant or specialty restaurant at any time. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed in the evening hours.
Crystal Cruises: Dress codes for specific sailings are determined close to the sailing date. As soon as it has been determined for your sailing, it can be viewed in the itinerary webpage for each voyage. However, for the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, the cruise line requires active resort wear until 6 pm when casual attire is not appropriate. After 6pm they request that guests wear “Crystal Casual” or Black Tie Optional attire, depending on the evening’s requirements. Crystal Casual includes blouses, sweaters, dressy slacks, skirts, dresses, collared shirts, button-down shirts, dress shirts, sport coat optional. Black tie option attire includes formal cocktail dresses, evening gowns, dressy evening separates, dark suits, and tuxedos.
Cunard Line: During the day, comfortable casual wear is acceptable including shorts and stylish jeans. Swimwear, sarongs, and fitness wear is acceptable in the appropriate locations on the ship. Effective at 6pm each night, evening attire is required. Closer to sailing, your Voyage Personaliser will inform you which nights will be formal and informal during your sailing. Informal nights require a jacket for men (tie optional) and cocktail dress or stylish separates for women. Formal nights require a dinner jacket, tuxedo, or dark suit with tie for men and a cocktail or evening dress for women. A variety of men’s formal wear is available to rent onboard.
Disney Cruise Line: Disney boasts about a magical cruising experience for the whole family, so they want everyone to be comfortable as they sail away. While most of the onboard dining is “cruise casual” meaning shorts and t-shirts are acceptable, there are optional dress-up nights and themed nights as well. If planning to eat in one of the specialty restaurants for guests who are 18+, Palo and Remy, it is important to know their dress code as well. Remy, the cruise line’s French restaurant onboard, has an elegant atmosphere, therefore the cruise line has a strict dress code for this venue for brunch and dinner. Dinner dress includes a jacket with dress pants for men (tie optional) and cocktail dress, evening dress, or pantsuit for women. For brunch and dinner men are expected to wear dress pants and shirts, jacket optional, and women should wear a dress or pantsuit. Disney does allow for guests to rent formalwear from the cruise line as well to be delivered to the stateroom upon arrival.
Holland America: Holland America has recently redone their dining dress code so that it is more in line with the style of their passengers. Most nights, smart casual attire is appropriate including jeans without holes, tears, or embroidery. On the Gala nights, men should wear collared shirts and slacks, and women should wear dresses, blouses and slacks, or pant suits.
Norwegian Cruise Line: The “Freestyle” cruise line, Norwegian has a fairly lenient dress code for passengers. Cruise casual attire is perfect for dining anytime during the day in the buffet and most specialty restaurants. For women, pants, shorts, jeans, casual dresses, skirts, and capris are acceptable and for men, khakis, jeans, shorts, and casual shirts are permitted. Swimwear is acceptable at the buffet and outdoor restaurant, but a shirt or cover-up and footwear is always required. If dining in the aft dining room or in Le Bistro the dress is smart casual. For women, that means slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts, and tops. For men, jeans or slacks with a collared shirt and closed toe shoes are appropriate. At any time, tank tops for men, flip flops, baseball caps, visors, and torn, faded or jeans worn below the hips are not permitted.
Oceania Cruises: Country Club Casual throughout the ships at all times. The cruise line truly wants guests to feel as though they are at their home away from home.
Princess Cruises: When packing for a Princess cruise there are two types of evening attire that you should plan for. First, for the smart casual nights, women should wear skirts, dresses, slacks, and sweaters, while men should wear pants and open-neck shirts. The second type is formal nights, which is when women should wear evening gowns and cocktail dresses, while men should wear tuxedos, dinner jackets, or dark suits with a tie. During the day, casual wear is permitted including sportswear, shorts, lightweight pants, jogging suits, and swimsuits in the appropriate areas of the ship.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises: While sailing with Regent Seven Seas Cruises, casual wear, including jeans and shorts is appropriate until 6pm each night, with the exception of embarkation day and the last night of every voyage, when the entire day is casual. For the evenings, the cruise line recommends elegant casual resort wear, which includes skirts, slacks, blouses, sweaters, pant suits, dresses, and collared shirts. Sport jackets are optional. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, or tennis shoes are not permitted at dinner. Ties are optional.
Royal Caribbean Cruises: While sailing with Royal Caribbean, the required attire varies based on the venue you are choosing to eat at. During the day, experience laid back vacationing and wear jeans, shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, and sundresses. During dinner, restaurants are either smart casual or formal. For the smart casual dining, guests are asked to wear jackets, sports coats, blazers, collared shirts, dresses, skirts, blouses, or pantsuits. In the formal restaurants, guests are asked to look their best in their black-tie attire. This is the time for guests to wear their suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns.
Seabourn Cruise Line: During the day, guests are able to wear casual, resort style attire including shorts and jeans in all of the lounges and dining venues onboard. Swimsuits and workout attire should be reserved for the appropriate locations on the ship. After 6pm, casual attire is no longer permitted and guests are asked to change into the appropriate attire for the night, either elegant casual or formal. For the elegant casual evenings, men are asked to wear collared dress shirts or sweaters. Jackets and ties are optional. Ladies are asked to wear slacks or skirts with blouses, pant suits, or dresses. On the formal nights, men are asked to wear tuxedos, suits, or slacks with a jacket and ladies are asked to wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses. The number of formal nights is based on the length of sailing.
Silversea: While sailing with Silversea there are multiple types of attire that are appropriate depending on the time of day and dining style for the evening. During the day, casual wear is appropriate. Evenings are broken into three categories: casual, informal, and formal. On the casual evenings, blouses, pants, skirts, casual dresses are best for women, while men are permitted to wear open-neck shirts and slacks. On informal evenings, women wear dresses or pantsuits and men wear jackets and slacks, tie optional. On formal evenings, women should wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses and men should wear tuxedos, dinner jackets, or dark suits. Tie is required.
Viking River Cruises: Viking River Cruises has a very comfortable and laid back dress code. During the day, casual attire is appropriate including shorts if the weather is permitting. At night, elegant casual attire is recommended including dresses, skirts, slacks, sweaters, and blouses for the ladies and trousers and a collared shirt for men. Ties and jackets are optional.
